Spider Monkeys Invade Costa Rican Lineups
10/1/2006
PLAYA HERMOSA, CR – Local surfers and tourists alike were outraged last month when hordes of Spider Monkeys severly congested surfing line-ups all across the country.
Most experts blame the destruction of their natural habitat, which requires large tracts of undisturbed jungle, as the main reason for the mass migration. Another popular, yet opposing theory, describes this recent phenomenon as simply a case of “monkey see, monkey do.”
“They’re just doing what us Gringos have been doing here in Costa Rica for decades, those slavish bastards,” angrily exlcaimed one Ex-pat.
Locals also claim that the monkeys blatantly and indiscriminately drop in on their human counterparts, and heckle anyone paddling out, thus denigrating the surfing vibe.
“It’s like they have no respect for us. They just come here to this country with all these sponsors on their boards and their fruits, and think they own the place. Plus, they’re throwing their feces at us. I mean c’mon, whatever happened to the ‘soul’ of surfing?” reports one angry local.
One surfer reports: “You say ‘Hola,’ and they don’t even say ‘Hola’ back.”
